Vintage, Thrift Stores, and Vision: A Tutorial of Sorts on How to Paint Fabric, Part I

People always ask “do you really find stuff at thrift shops?”  The answer is always “heck yeah”!  The thing with going to a thrift shop, whether it be Goodwill, Salvation Army, or the numerous second-hand, consignment and thrift shops we … Continue reading

Here We Are!

It seems like yesterday Lianny and I were in talks to expand the sweets emporium I call Sugar-Sugar Cakes. I don’t mean just make our presence more prominent. By “expand” I mean integrate and even transform “Sugar” into a more comprehensive, full service business that will benefit our clients and provide them with everything they need to truly customize their events. Out of this desire we have to “fabulize” (yes I know it’s not a real word) the party world, Vera Vintage Rentals was born! It’s not enough to make something that tastes good, unless it also looks good!

I have always enjoyed creating that special, unique cake for each customer and have been doing so successfully for years. But honestly, it was not the goal. Let it be said that I CAN NOT STAND the cookie cutter cakes. You know what I mean. The type you pick out of a book at the grocery store made with that fake buttercream? Now, don’t misunderstand me: I’m not knocking these cakes. There’s obviously a market for them. But seriously, even as a cake stylist I would be bored out of my mind if I had to make the same sponge sea creature cake over and over, ad nauseam. You see for us at Vera Vintage, and many others like us, a wedding, a party, an event, is not just something that’s thrown together. No! These snippets in history and time that we choose to celebrate (and forgive the drama, but I’m dramatic), become a part of US, OUR history, and they are many times added to the timelines of our lives. These events may be, for us, the most memorable moments in our lives. These are events that will be (deserve to be) forever remembered, recorded, and yes, even cherished. So how can we allow them to be perceived in a way that is not supremely special and spectacular?

So for a bit, Lianny and I have been stalking thrift shops, flea markets, and second-hand stores from North Metro Atlanta to North Carolina and while many will think of us as a bit crazy (okay, a lot crazy), we prefer to use the term dedicated because, in the end, it is that crazy dedication that we will bring to make your events that much better. So a little crazy is good sometimes. No?

Although we are not quite ready to present what we have in store for you, we would like to celebrate our little venture with a grand opening of sorts, only you get the gifts!
